Urged on by bel to accompany her to bed, i took to the task of reading The Sunday Times - my favourite newspaper for the week. Started off with the prime news. As usual, reports of government implementing this and that, the ongoing floods, Bush's plans for Iraq... Took some time to read the more interesting articles. Then came the most appealing segment - Lifestyle. Sumiko Tan's article titled "Me, Myself and Mine" expressed exactly how i felt about help and kindness in this world. "... you should show empathy and concern towards those around you, and if you can make others feel good, don't stop. Just don't expect or demand for that to be reciprocated." This statement explicitly shows the nature of human beings. There is never balance in a give-and-take situation. To have one's kindness returned is equivalent to the day when the sky collapses. That is why i never once expected people to return any form of favour and likewise, i don't like to accept favours from people unless inevitable. Sumiko Tan went on to mention, "... when i look back ... it does seem to be one endless period of seeking approval, striving to be nice and desiring to be loved and liked by the people i loved and liked." "Sometimes, the efforts were reciprocated and i'd be flying high." And the same goes for me. It may be a very small act on another party's part but it does wonders to another. By not asking too much from others will result in less disappointment. That's the way life is.
