Mr Bean's Holiday

Just an hour or so into tennis, the drizzle grew into a downpour. Stranded at YCK sports centre, Leonard, Chris and i walked up to the cafe to grab some bites. While waiting for the rain to die down, we spent our time playing Line-up 4 and Chinese Chess. Lol. An hour went pass just like that. After changing, we took the train down to Bishan for lunch and movie.
It was an unplanned decision to catch Mr. Bean on Holiday. Blardy lame show but quite entertaining with his usual antics and i love that little handsome boy in the movie. The part where he tried to hitch a ride at the highway was damn hilarious. And he using the compass to guide his way to G___ De Llyod [can't remember the name of that place], jammed the traffic, cut people's paths, climbed onto benches etc...
Then there was the seafood platter scene. First time trying fresh oysters i guess, he bit and swallowed it. The after effects brought the entire cinema breaking out in laughter. More laughters erupted when he tried to eat the cold lobster. Chewed the shell and downed it all. Geez.. Lol. Like always, it ends happily with the handsome boy finding his daddy.

AMK Hub

Accompanying my parents to Sin Ming to pray our ancestors early in the morning, we were soaking under the sweltering heat. Lots of elderly coupled with their children or grandkids around my age were present at the temple to pray as well. The elderly are definitely more pious than the younger generation. Ask me to remember such dates and which ancestors to pray to, i guess i have lots to learn from mummy.
Right after our praying, we took a cab to grandma's house. It was nearby and we sat around for awhile before making our way to AMK Hub for lunch and shopping. We surveyed from B2 to the 3rd storey to and eventually, New York New York was our choice for lunch.
Food wasn't as fabulous as thought out to be having seen long queues outside New York New York and it being packed with people during lunch and dinner times. Anyway, it's a one-time experience and i believe we will not step into that restaurant again. =x
Daddy had 1/2 chicken something while mummy had salmon steak. Both of them shared a coffee float. Awwww how sweet and i took several sips from it. Hehe. I had ribeye steak with black pepper sauce and lover's sunset as my quencher.
Shopping in NTUC for some electrical appliances and other home necessities was kinda fun. I was busy trying out the different sprays on myself. Smells nice~ Lol. Bought some small bites and bread for tomorrow's breakfast and off we went back to Northpoint's Harvey Norman for another electrical appliance. Big buys today...

Flesh Eating Bacteria

MUST READ!
Recent reports brought light to some flesh eating bacteria which are lethal. During the Lunar New Year period, an 83 year old was cut by the shell of an Indonesian mud crab and died within 48 hours. The cut was infected by a flesh eating bacteria found in crutaceans such as fish, mussels, crabs and other shellfish known as Vibrio.
Therefore, it was advised that all seafood be cooked thoroughly as the bacteria will be killed when food is cooked.
Symptoms of the lethal bacteria infection:
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomitting
  • Fever
  • Swell on the infected area

Please take care everyone. =)

I'm a left brainer

You Are 80% Left Brained, 20% Right Brained

The left side of your brain controls verbal ability, attention to detail, and reasoning.
Left brained people are good at communication and persuading others.
If you're left brained, you are likely good at math and logic.
Your left brain prefers dogs, reading, and quiet.

The right side of your brain is all about creativity and flexibility.
Daring and intuitive, right brained people see the world in their unique way.
If you're right brained, you likely have a talent for creative writing and art.
Your right brain prefers day dreaming, philosophy, and sports.

Spelling isn't important?

Try reading this paragraph.
"Royu ribna is vdieddi nito wot lhasev, nkwno as het grtih nda etlf ecrbrlea emhierpsseh. Ahec of etseh emhierpsseh is amed up fo bselo hwihc rea esprensbiol orf fideftner hgtnsi. Het rfotlan belo asedl twhi royu omosd nad hebrivoua nad meso ovtlunyar ovmtmesne. Eltmorap bselo on ahec dsei fo royu ribna mese to elda twhi eymmor, nsodu nad pesehc. Het cioclpita belo at het ckab fo het ribna esalysan hatw oyu ese."

Now, try reading this paragraph.
"Yuor biarn is dviedid itno two hlaevs, kownn as the rhigt and lfet cberreal himespehers. Ecah of teshe himespehers is mdae up of lboes wihch are repsosnilbe for driffneet tinhgs. The fonrtal lboe daels wtih yuor mdoos and bahevoiur and smoe vlunotray mvoemnets. Tmepoarl lboes on ecah sdie of yuor biarn seem to dael wtih momery, sunod and seepch. The ocpcital lboe at the bcak of the biarn alynases waht yuo see."

Most will find the second paragraph easier to comprehend than the first. Why is this so, you may ask. Both paragraphs are exactly the same only with the words jumbled up differently. Amazingly, the human brain reads words as a whole and not letter by letter. With the first and last letter of each word in the correct place, readers are able to decipher the words easily and read it as a whole. When the words are scrambled up like in the first paragraph, it is difficult for the reader to make out each word. So, does this mean that spelling of words correctly are no longer of importance? ;)

Anyway, just in case you have difficulty trying to make out the entire paragraph, here's what i actually wrote.

"Your brain is divided into two halves, known as the right and left cerebral hemispheres. Each of these hemispheres is made up of lobes which are responsible for different things. The frontal lobe deals with your moods and behaviour and some voluntary movements. Temporal lobes on each side of you brain seem to deal with memory, sound and speech. The occipital lobe at the back of the brain analyses what you see."

Timetable Selection

I've just settled today's task of selecting my timetable for next semester. Unable to get into the class of my choice, i chose the alternative which wasn't very favourable to me. However, having my good friends with me there overrides that. Since it's just an elective, doesn't really matter to me. I shall read up on the elective which i initially intended to take up.
Corporate secretarial practice was what i managed to enrol into. Financial markets and services was my choice. Sighs~. It isn't very useful in my field since i am not going to become a secretary? Besides, it doesn't serve any purpose in studying how to write minutes. I rather know the financial markets in Singapore and banking matters.
Argh... since i've taken this route, shall just study hard for it. Gain something from it instead of wasting 6 months of my time. Corporate secretarial practice... EEKS.

Meet the Pros

As usual, i had tennis with Chris at YCK and afterwhich, we proceeded to AMK Central to meet Leonard for lunch. There was this middle-aged lady who was damn pro in tennis. Slicing queen.. Tanned and lanky.
I had my mini wok rat's tail noodles for lunch. Yums~. Leonard and Chris were women watching as always, commenting on slim girls they see. Tsk tsk. There were descriptions for each type of girls. Example: van = fat and short, bus = fat and tall, scooter = short and averaged size... Lame. Haha
I don't know why, but guys love to go to arcades? So i tagged along and watched them play virtual tennis 3. Bored of watching them play, i switched my vision to the gals playing the drums. Some guys even brought their own set of drumsticks to hit the drums. o.O And a girl around Bel's age was shooting the balls into the basket. She's pro. Must have been on intensive training at arcades daily.
After that, we shopped in Sportslink. So many clothes, felt like buying but had to restrict myself. Splurging ain't good... Chris suggested on discussing about tennis matters and off we went to Mos Burger to carry out our discussion. It was already 6.30pm when i made a move.
So coincidentally, met gor at the bus interchange. Went home together. Mum wasn't happy with me for going home so late. =x Oh well, can't help it.

Way To Go~ Tennis

Two consecutive days of tennis left me tanner and blistered. Though on both ocassions i wasn't playing on top form, it was still as fun as ever. With Chris accompanying me every tennis session, sparring with a guy is no easy feat.
After friday's training, i rallied with Chris for an hour and i was tired out. Yesterday at YCK, we played once again. Within one hour, both of us were drained. Partially due to the heat under the hot sun and the continuous running of the width of the court.
Then it was time for lunch! Chris and i took a bus to J8 for lunch. I had japanese salmon bento set while he ate 2 plates of chicken rice. Geez.. guys can really eat huh? Sat around for a chat and he was reluctant to go as always. This time round, i insisted on going home and he relented. Haha.. Touche~
It's tennis again tomorrow! *Shrieks*

Lunch at Tiong Bahru Market

Like i mentioned in yesterday's post, along with my family, we set off especially to Tiong Bahru market for lunch. Had our usual and in addition, yong tau foo and rojak. Didn't really eat much compared to the past few days as i wasn't feeling too well. A migraine kicked up from nowhere and hurt terribly. Shall rest earlier tonight.
The cab ride home was fun with daddy engaging in a conversation with the taxi driver. He was damn funny with all his big actions and one good thing was he conversed in english. [At least for me, since my mandarin really CMI.] He even took the longer route as instructed by daddy so that they can converse for several minutes more. Haha.. The talks on education, family, children, money matters... were current affairs which affect every household and thus interesting to hear them talk about it.
Soon, we reached our block and they had to part ways. Nice trip home. =)

IKEA

With part of the heart expecting the worst and the other part nervous yet excited, i hurriedly logged into NPAL to check my exam results. Today was the release of past semestral examination results. Heaved a sigh of relief as i did not fare as badly as i thought i had even though my GPA dropped by 0.075, which is quite a huge margin. So the resultant GPA is still acceptable and considered satisfactory. Must be contented yeah? Haha..
Before long, i was on the way to IKEA Furniture store with my family. Holy cow, it is extremely huge. Surrounded by Courts Megastore and Giant hypermarket, IKEA still stands out among them.
We started off at the children's section viewing the various showrooms, usual necessities in a kid's room, etc... On and on we walked, fascinated by the designs came up by designers around the world. There was this dining table which can be extended by sliding apart the both ends of the table and adding planks of extension in the middle. From a table of six to eight to a table of twelve or more. Cool man!
I loved the study room area where they showcased different designs of the study table, book shelves, work area, etc. Just seeing how neatly everything can be placed gave me that sudden urge to re-renovate gor's room and make it awesomely classy and business-like.
There were the bedroom section, kitchen section, dining room section, living room section and various bathrooms incorporated within these sections. Simply fabulous. That's when money can do wonders if you have your own home. Purchase whatever you like, do-it-yourself and design it in a way like no other. The beauty of IKEA. =)
Since we were hungry by then, off we went to the restaurant cum cafe and had lunch. I had Swedish meatballs and chocolate almond cake. Daddy had chicken with chips combo set and he took extra buns since it's self service. Lol. *shrugs* Mummy had chicken wings, chicken pie and lime jelly. Bel ordered curry chicken with rice and chocolate mousse. And we shared the food. Mamamia~!
Making our way down to the first level after lunch, we viewed kitchen ware, lightings and lamps, mats, photoframes, scented flower petals, vases and potted plants. I held up a potted plant and shook it to make it look as if it is alive. Mimicking how a live plant would speak, i said, "Oh no, not me, not me. I don't want to be the next victim!" Directing it to daddy, he laughed out loud and said shit you. Whahahaha.. Know the reason why? Daddy's plants withered and died once they were taken care of by him i.e. he has no green fingers. =x
Then we came to this huge area whereby you pick the boxes of furniture which you had initially recorded down while viewing. IKEA has this amazing culture such that you choose whatever furniture you wish to purchase and record down the wood number and various details on pieces of paper and pencil provided. Unable to reach those furniture high above and help will be provided. I just love the outlay and culture of IKEA. Soon, we were out of IKEA and made our way to Causeway Point shopping mall.
Finally, i bought my 1/2 inch heels. A silvery grey pair of shoes. Happy me! Gotta start with low heels and slowly advance higher. Lol. Country bumpkin who doesn't know how to walk properly in heels. Looked at the earrings but they were all dangling ones, unsuitable for me. Soon after, we were on our way home. Dinner's bread! Haha.. shall eat less after 2 days of indulgence and somemore, tomorrow's another big meal to look forward to at Tiong Bahru! Weeee~

Scrumptious Lunch

Tennis training cancellation was replaced by going out with my family to Golden Mile Towers for lunch at Thien Kee Steamboat Restaurant. Definitely yummilicious~! In addition to our steamboat, we had satay, seafood noodles and pork chop. Mouth watery food. Haha.. That scrumptious meal left all our tummies packed with food.
Afterwhich, we headed over to Golden Mile Food Centre to collect our ordered fried Hokkien Prawn Noodles. Within 5 minutes, we were on our way to Lavender to buy our favourite Minced Meat Noodles. It's a noodley day. A family of gourmets or gluttons? Lol.. Anyway, that was for dinner. Absolutely fantastic. Slurps~.

Putting aside that food fiesta, i came across this really touching poem for a lost one.

A wilted plant
Missing the nurturing care
Of a loved one
Gone but not forgotten
Memories of the heart
Will never be forsaken

Bluey Me

The morning started out with a jog at the nearby park. Only managed to complete 2.4km and i was already exhausted. Lacked my training on stamina. Shall build it up from scratch again.
Tennis training was cancelled owing to some who worked till the wee hours at Suntec IT Fair. Sian.. unable to play tennis. Gotta wait till friday where i can only stay for a maximum of 3 hours before rushing back home. Geez.. can't tag along with Coach and Chris to take lunch. Oh well, there are opportunities in the days to come.

As of today, quite a few of my good friends are away in a foreign land.
~Baoyi [China, IBSM]
~Stephie [China, IBSM]
~Dickson [China, IBSM]
~Xhi Ween [China, IBSM]
~Guan Hong [China, IBSM]
~Dave [China, attachment]
~Eugene [China, attachment]
~Leonard [Korea, holidays]

And two of my close relatives...
~Stephanie [London, studying]
~Donald [India, NS]

Haiz... unable to contact all of them except for my god sis, Stephanie. Gotta wait for the rest to be back home. For now, it's totally off contacts... Probably email-ing is the only way we can keep in touch? Hmmm... really miss all of them.

Gender Identity Disorder (GID)

Gender identity disorder (GID) is a condition in which a person has been assigned one gender, usually on the basis of their sex at birth, but identifies as belonging to another gender, or does not conform with the gender role their respective society prescribes to them. [definition adapted from www.wikipedia.org]. Hard to digest this chunk of words? Simply putting it, GID is a term present in transexuals whereby they are born a male but feels like a female and the vice versa is true.
This disorder occurs mostly during the childhood period, some during their adoloscence, or even when they have already become an adult.
From researches done, girls assume masculine role such as behaving like a tomboy and pretending to be daddy when playing house. As for boys, they assume feminine roles by engaging in the use of cosmetics or in nursing an infant. This is a normal sex role development.
However, in some cases, there are extremities. Skewed to one extreme, boys reject their masculinity and insists on being a girl. This is when GID falls into place. By avoiding in playing with guys and prefers hanging out with girls, trying on dresses, experimenting cosmetics, exhibiting feminine postures and behaviour... are some of the common characteristics displayed by them.
Often, they are ostracised by their peers, and result in them being anti-social. Those who are unable to handle the ridicule faced, more often than not, fall into depression.
Therefore, most turn to sex changes. Sex changes are uncommon in Singapore but very regular in Thailand. The frequency of plastic surgeries carried out by Singaporean doctors compared to those of Thailand's is dimunitive. Thus Singaporeans who desire a sex change would visit Thailand for the doctors' experience and skills in plastic surgery. In addition, the cost of the operation is much cheaper in Thailand.
Resultant? The 'shes' usually act more femininely than most normal females are and the 'hes' are able to hide their identity better than the 'shes' as they are usually cooler and calmer, just like normal males.
This is just a short introduction to GID and for more information, please refer to various websites if you are interested in this topic.

Vigorous Tennis Session

Since today's turnout for tennis was meagre, there was no training. Under the hot sun, i played singles against Leonard followed by Chris, with Coach giving me pointers as i played. After almost 1 1/2 hrs of continuous vigorous tennis-ing, i was left breathless. It was tiring but super duper fun. A game of strategies, mental strength and physical endurance.
Not long after, i took my bus ride home. Yet again, i met another strange kid. Just last friday, a little boy stared at me from the time i boarded the bus to the time he alighted from the bus. He even came up to me and asked something which i couldn't decipher.
Today, this secondary school girl who aboarded the bus kept looking at me and ahem, my thighs for no particular reason. She even changed seats to sit beside me. Stealing glances at me every once in awhile, she made me feel so uncomfortable. I didn't dare to shut my eyes to take a rest. And from my peripheral vision, she kept playing with her hair and scratched her face. Weird?
No doubt i love kids but geez.. these kids are scaring me. Maybe i read too deeply into rheir actions...

Enough of strange encounters, i took to the task of changing my blogskin. Partially due to boredom, a fraction due to knowing that someone shares the same blogskin as me and the most important factor was the want of creating freshness to my blog.
This blogskin is simple and easy to navigate. Simplicity is my policy in choosing blogskins. =) Any comments on it, please leave them in my taggie. Thanks!

Indonesia Earthquake

Twin-quakes hit West Sumatra [Indonesia] on Tuesday, causing Singaporeans to shudder. A death toll of 52 was reported as of today. The first quake struck at 11.49am with a magnitude of 6.3 and the second at 1.49pm with a magnitude of 6.1. Both were considered deep earthquakes.
An interesting fact i learnt from the newspapers was the classification of different quakes according to their magnitudes.
  • Shallow Earthquake - occurs randomly with a magnitude between 1 and 5
  • Deep Earthquake - occurs every 20-30 years with a magnitude between 6 and 8
  • Subduction Earthquake - occurs every 100-1000 years with a magnitude greater than 8

Unfortunately, Indonesia happens to be within the Pacific ring of fire, which makes it prone to earthquakes. The worst hit quake was in Boxing day in 2004 where the tsunami struck, raising the magnitude to 9.1.
This time round, the epic centre of the quake was pretty strong, resulting in tremors felt in both Singapore and Malaysia. Amazingly, i felt nothing on both occasions. The Central Business District [CBD], Ang Mo Kio, Bishan, St Andrew's JC and Ngee Ann Poly were some of the affected areas in Singapore.
Dickson was mentioning to me that Blk 72 of NP was shaking badly, which gave him a scare. Haha.. Would it have occurred to me, i guess i would be swooned by the dizzy spell.
Given the fact that Singapore's building infrastructures are 3 times stronger than their original strength, tremors would not cause them to collapse. However, one can never be certain that accidents will not happen. What if it does?
Are the measures lain out by SCDF sufficient to control the entire situation? From the news reports, many are definitely not prepared for it. People are still taking the lifts which is basic knowledge that they should be avoided in case they jam or collapse. Some only reacted when they received messages from their friends that there were tremors and told to evacuate immediately. The buildings do not wait for one to leave before they come crashing down. Therefore, it is important that more of such exercises be carried out to raise awareness and preparedness among Singaporeans.
This is yet another tragic disaster...

Taken for Granted

People can be pain in the neck at times. Why this sudden thought, you may ask me. Well, i've had several encounters with people who befriend me with the mere intention of getting help from me. Those whom i seldom mix with, those whom i rarely come into contact with... A phone call or a message springs out from nowhere and asks for favours. And the number doesn't dwindle. In fact, it increases as i mix with more people.
Once... twice... thrice... It carries on and on. At times, i lament on the fact as to why people are so thick-skinned. Only when they require a favour from me, will they then seek for me. Am i an aide or a last resort to them?
I do not really mind helping them but there is a limit to the level where my irritability starts acting up. Time and again, i do you the favour you requested. What do i gain in return - nothing. Probably this is human nature.
Those who are too soft-hearted get taken advantage of most of the time. Just like daddy, i share a similar fate as him. Ask me to reject one's request to help, i can't do it. If only i took away some of mummy's "hard-hearted" genes. Sometimes, i suppose it really does help.
I'm quite tired of continually doing others a favour at the expense of both time and money. If only you can give me a break, i will be more than thankful.
Treat me like a normal human being. I'm not angelic for god's sake. There is this chinese proverb which came to my mind as i wrote this entry. "yoŭ lái yoŭ qù"

Cooked Lobster

Tennis training as usual. Today, i'm well cooked under the sun. My face, hands and legs are burnt. Risking the possibility of skin cancer? Maybe...
Training was as intensive as ever and with a pathetic turnup of 5 people only, it made training even more strenuous. Nevertheless, it was good exercise. I seemed to be a magnet to the tennis balls today. Balls came my way and were near misses. Phew.. Only one came right at me and i scrammed in time. Played with Chris till 2pm before we made our way to AMK Central for lunch. Being a sweetie, he bought lunch. Chatted till almost 5pm before i insisted on going home.
However, he disallowed! He insisted on going to the arcade upstairs to play his Virtual Tennis. Tagged along and made me play Daytona with him. I sucked at it. I was behind him by half a circuit. Obviously i lost even though i used auto for my car and he used manual.
Finally, we headed home. Shrieks~ My refreshing bath!! =p

Last Day of Lunar New Year

Very quickly, the Lunar New Year has come to an end. To mark the end of this period, we had steamboat for both lunch and dinner. Yums~!
Steamboat was homemade and thus superb. There was a variety of ingredients to mix with and the shitake mushrooms were fabulous. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
This reminds me of the past few years where we skipped the practice of having steamboat. Instead, we replaced it with yusheng. This year, we only managed to "lau" it once. Haha, it was fun nevertheless. Mummy brought the mixture of vegetables really high up. Bel even stood on the chair. Lol.. That two crazy peeps.
The many preparations before the first day of the New Year ended with a silent note on the very last day. No more lion dance drummings to hear until next year. And the process repeats itself...

My Relatives

Met up with Hui Ching in the afternoon to pass her the present Dave bought for her. Not long after i reached home, Dua Yi and Jessica arrived. It was wonderful to see them again.
Jess has changed quite abit. No longer the shy and quiet her. She's outspoken and very chirpy. Great! And she looks young as ever, just like her sister. Geez... young genes run in their family and not in mine.
We had dinner together, with mummy cooking her speciality. I guess both Dua Yi and Jess enjoyed it. Jess ate alot even after dinner. Lol. What an appetite.
I'm so happy to see her. It has been long since we last met. And of course, her elder sister, Stephanie. Currently pursuing her studies in London. Hope she's doing well there. It will be soon when we meet up. Looking forward to the day when we hang out the whole day and dine at Seoul Garden. =))

Roasted

Woke up to the sounding of my alarm and it's time for tennis training again! Reached there pretty early and rallied with SK. Then came Kenly and he joined in. By 11am, i was perspiring throughout.
Coach arrived and it was training time. 5 rounds for warm up with fore run, side runs and back runs. Having not gone for regular jogs, i panted with every step i took. Geez.. it's time for regular jogs or my stamina would be gone in months to come.
Training resumed as per normal. Once again, i was the only girl training. I wasn't spared the tough training meted out. Come to think of it, tough training benefitted me. As 10 people turned up for training only, 8 played doubles while 2 played singles. I was made to play singles with Chris. =.=
Under that blazing hot afternoon sun, i was tired out very quickly. In addition, both of us were trying out the new racquets coach brought for us. I bought his friend's second hand Wilson N-Code racquet with cross-fire mesh and a tampener which cost me $90 only! So cheapppp. Haha..Usual price $230. So happie. Returned the brand new Yonex racquet coach bought for me. Oops, wasted his money. =x
Chris was interested in my Wilson racquet but he came a tad too late. Haha.. so i got it first. Weeee~ Soon, it was 1pm and time to go home or i would be homeless...

Early Pregnancy

While i was reading the newspapers today, one particular headline caught my eye. "Why kids need sex education? Girl, 9, pregnant." I was shocked. This is probably the youngest girl in Singapore to have her pregnancy at the age of 9. She experimented sexual intercourse with a 14 year old. Geez.. What is becoming of kids these days?!
Just yesterday, a letter was sent to me for the second time to complete the survey conducted by Health Promotion Board (HPB). This survey was on sex education as well. Casting it aside as i was preparing for my exams during the period when i received 5 emails and a letter from HPB, i didn't take to the task of completing it. I was thinking to myself what's the fuss about me having to complete it when it's optional. Now, i do realise the importance of it.
Kids these days ought to be educated on sex. The average number of abortion cases had increased to about 1500 a year. This posed both a health threat to the mother and the unborn.
Indeed, i never once approved of pre-marital sex. What if the contraceptive isn't functioning properly? They are never fool proof. A resultant foetus will bring lots of unnecessary problems when both parties are unprepared for it. The trauma those involved has to go through is immense. Why allow curiosity to over rule the level headedness one has? Does it benefit in any way? I believe the cons outweigh the benefits.
Perform safe sex with only one faithful sex partner after marriage. That's what i truly feel.
