Gender Identity Disorder (GID)

Gender identity disorder (GID) is a condition in which a person has been assigned one gender, usually on the basis of their sex at birth, but identifies as belonging to another gender, or does not conform with the gender role their respective society prescribes to them. [definition adapted from www.wikipedia.org]. Hard to digest this chunk of words? Simply putting it, GID is a term present in transexuals whereby they are born a male but feels like a female and the vice versa is true.
This disorder occurs mostly during the childhood period, some during their adoloscence, or even when they have already become an adult.
From researches done, girls assume masculine role such as behaving like a tomboy and pretending to be daddy when playing house. As for boys, they assume feminine roles by engaging in the use of cosmetics or in nursing an infant. This is a normal sex role development.
However, in some cases, there are extremities. Skewed to one extreme, boys reject their masculinity and insists on being a girl. This is when GID falls into place. By avoiding in playing with guys and prefers hanging out with girls, trying on dresses, experimenting cosmetics, exhibiting feminine postures and behaviour... are some of the common characteristics displayed by them.
Often, they are ostracised by their peers, and result in them being anti-social. Those who are unable to handle the ridicule faced, more often than not, fall into depression.
Therefore, most turn to sex changes. Sex changes are uncommon in Singapore but very regular in Thailand. The frequency of plastic surgeries carried out by Singaporean doctors compared to those of Thailand's is dimunitive. Thus Singaporeans who desire a sex change would visit Thailand for the doctors' experience and skills in plastic surgery. In addition, the cost of the operation is much cheaper in Thailand.
Resultant? The 'shes' usually act more femininely than most normal females are and the 'hes' are able to hide their identity better than the 'shes' as they are usually cooler and calmer, just like normal males.
This is just a short introduction to GID and for more information, please refer to various websites if you are interested in this topic.
