Paralympics

Where is the much deserved attention for Paralympics?
Over is the Olympics and now comes the Paralympics. An equivalence of the Olympics but for the not so able-bodied athletes.

This year round, Singapore did well and obtained several medals, both in the Olympics and Paralympics. I applaud the hard work put in by our talents. They are Singapore's pride and glory.

First came the Olympics silver from the table-tennis women paddlers. That great achievement won the hearts of many Singaporeans and wowed the entire nation. PM Lee even postponed his rally in order for Singaporeans at home to catch the live telecast of the women's table-tennis finals.

The next day, the women paddlers' faces were splashed all over the front page of the newspapers and two-three full pages of the sports section showed their glorious moments. Look at the amount of attention they received...

Then came the Paralympics. Two of our athletes did our nation proud to earn a gold medal and several bronze medals. However, practically no media coverage was given to our home grown Paralympic athletes in the same way as did in the Olympics.

I do not see why there is a difference in treatment between the Olympic athletes and those from Paralympics. All of them fought hard to earn Singapore world recognition but Singapore did not even give our Paralympic athletes the attention they deserve.

Isn't a gold medal more prestigious than a silver? But why does a silver earn more prestige than that of a gold? Simply because it's from the Olympics and not the Paralympics?

This is extremely unbecoming. We do not see in the daily papers the faces of our Paralympic heroines splashed all across the front page of the prime news section. Their faces were hidden until we flip the pages to the sports section.

From young, we've learnt never to discriminate against those who are less fortunate than us. Right now, they are doing their best to glorify the country but they received little or even no glory from their own country. How ironic.

Despite their physical inabilities, they strived hard and competed with world-class athletes to gain a spot on the winners' podium, and they did. Unfortunately, we do not see the same kind of response as received by the Olympic athletes. In what way are they inferior to them? I simply do not understand and cannot comprehend.

I'm definitely behind these Paralympic athletes not out of sympathy but that of courage, determination, perseverance and immense fighting spirit. Not any Tom, Dick or Harry can achieve such great results.

Well, all of you deserve a thunderous applaud and should be welcomed back as heroines to Singapore. In no way are all of you inferior to anyone else. *Claps*
